The Testing Book Review

Ok, so we have been meaning to do a book review for quite a long time, but after asking each other numerous times, "What book should we review?" we just shrugged and went back to whatever it was we were doing. Finally, we became determined to review a book no matter what the cost! We have noticed, though, that we have been known for doing book reviews for the second or third books in a series without actually reviewing the first book. I guess you could say, that is a problem. So, we decided to review a book that we recently read this summer and is the FIRST book in the series. Also, please take note of our the new feature to our book reviews where we review the amount of violence, sexual content, and language so y'all can make sure you don't fill your brains with garbage!

Book Review:

The future of the world belongs to a few selected candidates: ones with intelligence, bravery, and spunk. But before these young contestants can become leaders, they must pass a gruesome challenge called, The Testing. Cia Vale has been searching for something to do with the rest of her life, so when she is selected for The Testing, she is overjoyed. However, Cia's father reveals The Testing may not be as great as she thinks. Her father warns her that no one can be trusted. But when Cia reunites with Tomas, a classmate of hers who has also been chosen for The Testing, she is certain she can trust him to be apart of her alliance. And as The Testing begins, she may indeed need an alliance, as this challenge may not be like anything she has ever experienced.

Violence:A fair amount of violence, but not as extreme as most books these days. There is shooting, a teen suicide, and numerous deaths, without too much description.

Sexual Content: The only suggestive content is some mushy kisses (yuck!) and hand holding.

Language: The language is quite mild besides d--- uttered here or there and a few exclamations of h---. God's name is also declared a couple times.

Joelle Charbonneau has certainly thought of an interesting concept in her latest book, The Testing, but we had to stop and ask the question, "Doesn't this plot line sound a bit familiar?" To be honest, we couldn't help but compare this book to the ever so famous The Hunger Games and when we did compare the two, we would have to say that Suzanne Collins' dystopian sci-fi novel was a bit more exciting. Nevertheless, we did enjoy some aspects of this book. The first couple rounds of The Testing had us eager to find out what was going to happen next and the mysterious aspect of this novel kept us engaged for a few more chapters. However, this read did lack a couple of things, one being emotion and character. We felt as if Cia did not have much depth or layers to her personality. That being said, we found it a little difficult to get through this book. The similarity of this novel and other dystopian fiction caused us to pound our heads in frustration and ask each other why authors cannot come up with more original ideas.
We rate this book
3 of 5 sta

Hattie Ever After Book Review

Sorry for not posting anything in a while! The team has been caught up in a whirlwind of activities! We're excited to present a new book review for ya'll. Be sure to comment below and subscribe to our blog.

Hattie has a big dream-she wants to be a reporter. This seems impossible, especially for Hattie, a once lowly seventeen-year-old orphan who gave up everything to work on her uncle's homestead. So when she finally gets a chance as a not-so-classy cleaning lady in San Francisco, she decides to accept the challenge. Little does she know, this job could be more than she's bargained for.

Hattie is caught between her past relationships and the glamour her new lifestyle holds. In the end, she must choose to follow either her heart or her head.

Kirby Larsen certainly caught our attention with her compelling debut novel Hattie Big Sky. Unfortunately, the second book didn't live up to our high standards but it definitely had a well-thought plot and character development. It was an enjoyable easy read. If you are as curious as we were about Hattie's life after living on the farm, then be sure to check out this wonderful conclusion to the series.

The Teen Book Blog rates Hattie Ever After a 3/5 stars. "Interesting but was a slow page turner."

The Captive Maiden Book Review

Hello everyone!
We hope you all had a great Christmas and are enjoying the holiday season! We have been meaning to post a review on The Captive Maiden for quite some time, but because of all the busyness and hustle and bustle of the Christmas season, we hadn't found the time to do so. Finally, here is the review of the long-awaited The Captive Maiden by Melanie Dickerson.

Gisela has always dreamed of a happily-ever-after fairy tale life for herself, but ever since her Father died, those hopes and dreams have quickly faded away. Now she is forced  to work for her evil step mother, who makes her life miserable. When Gisela meets the duke's son (her childhood lover), Valten, he immediately captures her heart. After she hears of a ball he is hosting, Gisela absentmindedly promises to attend. But because of certain circumstances, Gisela doesn't know if she can sneak past her cunning stepmother and stepsisters.  At the event, Valten is mesmerized by her beauty and he too falls deeply in love. Danger wants to destroy the relationship they had started to build and it threatens to harm them and those they care the most about.

The Captive Maiden, based on the classic Cinderella tale was a bit of a disappointment for us. We had high hopes for this story, but to our displeasure, it was much like the rest of Melanie Dickerson's novels from her fairy tale series. Though it did have a few suspenseful scenes and heartwarming moments, it was a bit dull and typical. We still suggest giving this novel a try just to finish off the series and see how you like it yourself. The Teen Book Blog gives this book a  3/5 stars. Like we noted to before, it wasn't bad, but it wasn't incredible either.

Anomaly Book Review

In a world void of emotions, Thallium has been gifted with the ability to feel sadness, despair, and love. While those around her live in a haze, Thalli struggles to keep her feelings hidden behind an expressionless face. When an incident occurs, revealing her true self, Thalli is destined for death, an annihilation where scientists probe and test her as their "experiment." With the help of her friends, Berk and John, she learns the values of life and the meaning of love.

"Anomaly," by Krista McGee answers life's hardest questions about our world and what our purpose may be. This sci-fi and Christian Fiction novel has readers engaged right up to the very last page. Pins & Paperbacks rates this book a 3.5/5.
